Project Purpose

The project will replace the pavement, runway lighting, and visual aids for Runway 7/25 to improve safety and reliability.

Planned Improvements

New base course and pavement
New pavement markings
New edge and threshold lighting
New airfield signage
New REIL and PAPI visual aids
Improved lighting controls for the ATCT
New runway designation of 8/26

Project FAQs

How long will RW 7/25 be closed?
Runway 7/25 will be closed continuously for 60 days. Also, RW 16/34 will close for 21 nights near the end of the 7/25 closure period.

Can I still fly during construction?
Yes! RWs 16/34 and 5/23 will remain open for operations.

Can I taxi across 7/25 while it's closed?
Yes. Temporary runway crossings will be available during construction.

May 2024: Advertised for Bid

The project was released for bidding, inviting contractor proposals for construction of runway, lighting, and associated NAVAID improvements.

Fall 2024: FAA Grant Award

Merrill Field Airport accepted the FAA Grant in September 2024.

June 2025: Notice to Proceed Issued

Official Notice to Proceed initiated the start of construction activities for Runway 07/25 rehabilitation.

Jun

June-August 2025: Runway Closure

Runway 07/25 was fully closed for 60 days while crews completed milling, paving, lighting upgrades, NAVAID improvements, and final striping. This continuous closure enabled efficient completion of all airfield work.

September-November 2025: Project Closeout and Final Documentation

Punchlist items, final NAVAID work, and final inspections are anticipated.

Sep

Late 2025: Project Closeout

All construction packages will be finalized, and documentation will be completed to close out the Merrill Field Improvement Project.
