ENGSTROM NORTH
EXTENSION TO TEX-AL

Project Overview The Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) proposes to extend Engstrom Road by establishing a new roadway connection between East Wolf Creek Road and East Aspen Ridge Road. In addition, the MSB plans to upgrade two sections of existing roadway, including:

  • The section of existing road between East Wolf Creek Road and East Tex-Al Drive

  • The section of existing road between East Aspen Ridge Road and East Beechcraft Road

  • Upon completion, the entire length of the project corridor will consist of a two-lane roadway designed and constructed to Major Collector standards. The project may include the construction of a pathway, depending on cost.

    Addressing Connectivity & Congestion
The 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) identified that a connection between Engstrom Road and Tex-Al Road would provide nearby subdivisions with access to Palmer-Fishhook and Wasilla-Fishhook, which would relieve congestion and increase safety along Engstrom Road and at the Engstrom-Bogard Intersection.

The Engstrom Road North Extension to Tex-Al Drive project aligns with key MSB plans, including:
  • 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP)
  • 2022 Official Streets and Highways Plan (OSHP)
  • 2024 Transportation Infrastructure Program 2024 (TIP24)

Through summer and fall 2025, field crews will be in the project area to delineate wetlands and cultural resources, survey the existing easements, and collect geotechnical information.

A public meeting is anticipated to take place in the Fall/Winter of 2025.

    Project Components

In summer/fall of 2025 field studies will take place within existing public easements or rights-of-way including environmental, geotechnical, and survey.

Improvements to existing roadways are proposed to ensure seamless integration with the new roadway.

The Borough will evaluate and acquire necessary land for the project.

Coordination with utility owners will ensure that any affected utilities are relocated with minimal disruption.

Roadside ditching and culverts will be incorporated into the roadway design to ensure adequate water flow to preserve the roadbed.

The roadway will be equipped with appropriate signage and striping.
